A Pelsall couple who won a “good neighbour” award from Walsall Housing Group have donated their £1,000 winnings to the communal gardens where they live.
Stan and Maureen Woods were recognised by whg in its Community Spirit reward scheme for the help and support they give their next-door neighbour Bernadette Suppiah.
They were presented with the first prize of vouchers worth £1,000 which they spent on the communal gardens at their block of flats.
Mr Woods said: “It was a surprise to win this award because we only do what we would do for any neighbour. I mow Bernadette’s front lawn, plant up her hanging baskets and pots, and I clean her windows when I’m doing ours.
“Bernadette is lovely and the best neighbour you could have. She often pops round for a cup of tea with us. We just look out for each other, like neighbours should.”
Ann Parkes, whg’s customer services manager, said: “It is lovely to hear of the great work that customers are involved in out in their communities, and it is an absolute pleasure to recognise and reward such outstanding individuals.”
Nominations for whg’s annual Community Spirit reward scheme can be submitted throughout the year and the next deadline is September 30, 2012.
Categories are good neighbour, community garden champion and outstanding young people. Forms are available from whg’s housing offices or online under the “Residents’ Area” section of www.whg.uk.com
